Crank It Up 2009
Thanks to everyone who made Crank It Up 2009 happen! A lot of hard work, some great music, and lots of bikes made for a great event.
Here’s how we looked (smashing):

- What: Bikes, Bands, Fun!
- When: Saturday, September 12th from 1 to 6pm
- Where: Cesar Chavez Park at 7th Ave S and S Cloverdale St in South Park
- How Much? FREE (with donations graciously accepted)
- Parking: If you didn’t ride your bike, which we highly (sternly?) recommend, there is plenty of street parking up 7th Ave and its side streets. Please DO NOT park in the lot at Concord Elementary at the top of the hill. Around it is ok.
Bikes
First we’re going to pimp our rides at 1pm. Bring your bike and we’ll supply the rest—shiny stuff, glitter, ribbons, the whole she-bang will be at your fingertips for your sweet, human-powered wheels.
We must say this. Your safety is muy importante! If you’re going on the ride, make sure your bike is in good working order. We’ll have tools available for emergencies, but your bike should be up to snuff before rubber meets the road. Make sure to wear sturdy shoes and a helmet to protect your cranium and bring your water bottle. If you don’t have a helmet, we’ll fit you with a new free one!
Now keep in mind, this isn’t a parade and it’s not Critical Mass. We follow The Rules Of The Road, just like cars, which means we stop at red lights and stop signs. Right? Right. Ok, the ride starts at 2 pm.
Where are we going? you ask. First, we’ll pass the Community Center where the Duwamish Cup will be in full swing! The South Park River Ratz take on Georgetown’s 9 lb Hammer in the grudge match of the year. Cheer on your team (Go Ratz!) but don’t do something stupid like fall off your bike cuz you’re clapping so hard.
Then, the bike route will take you past the gems of South Park. We’ll ride to our beloved Duwamish River and to our forsaken South Park Bridge. We’ll pass the Marina and our award-winning Library and we’ll take in the beauty of Marra Farms. It’s a nice ride, but don’t use up all your energy. We’ve got some dancing to do.
Bands
Who’s playing? you ask. We’ve got three top-notch bands playing this year…
3:00 The Not-Its! Kids, are you ready to rock? Get out your black n white stripes and your pink tutu’s and show us your Red Light/Green Light moves. You’ll love your first rock n roll experience!
4:00 Ambulance is a hot three-piece band that’s kinda punk, kinda pop, kinda freakin’ awesome. Download their songs, memorize the lyrics, jump around like a spazz when they play. You can brag you saw ‘em before they got huge.
5:00 DJ LA is the master of Language Arts. He’s gonna make us sway and bob as we wave goodbye to one fine summer.
Fun!
What else is happening? you ask. Well…
- You can help Horatio Law make a backdrop of hand-cut snowflakes, do a video interview and then watch the video installment next week at Fiestas Patrias! Horatio has been commissioned to do some South Park Public Art—check out his work here.
- The Poem Lady, Cathy Hendrickson, of ‘A Poem of One’s Own’ fame will be at your service with her trusty Smith Corona. For $5 Cathy will take your random thoughts, memories and personal issues and spin them into a priceless piece of word art.
- Seattle City Light will have an interactive exhibit where you’ll be able to Crank Up and power CFL and incandescent light bulbs! with your own little hands!
- An event’s not an event without face painting! No worries, your face won’t have to be naked. We’ll paint it up.
- And you’ll be able to eat yourself silly. Full Tilt Ice Cream, Los Agaves tacos and tamales, hot dogs & Field Roast dogs, soda drinks and iced coffee. Yummers!
- Check out this year’s tee! Tres hot, yes?
Know the best part of Crank It Up? It’s YOU. We get to hang out with, eat hot dogs with and shake our booties with YOU. We’re very much looking forward to seeing you. (But a haircut wouldn’t hurt, ya know.)
And now for some gushing love for our sponsors. We adore you. Fun wouldn’t happen without you! Many thanks.
