Amaranta Ibarra Sandys
I studied at Escuela de Artesanias, Instituto Nacional de Bellas Artes where I specialized in chemistry composition of glazes, hand built techniques, adapting and experimenting traditional decorative techniques such as: burnishing, sgraffito and under-glazed.
Later on 2000, I moved back t Seattle with a different approach, vision and ambition, my first Art collaboration started with La Casa de Artes and Seattle Art Museum during Dia de los Muertos or Day of the Dead celebrations. From that time, my artistic path has become a great journey, sharing my culture with schools, community centers and non profit organizations.
The presence of my artwork and collaborations had been seen in different galleries in Mexico City and Seattle: Elliott Bookstore, Ballard Family Center, Seattle Pottery School, Richard Hugo House, Pike Place Market, Bellevue Art Museum, Seattle Center gallery, Burien City Hall, La Familia gallery, Artopia festival, Shoreline Arts festival, among others.
My artwork evolves different levels of hand built techniques, particularly working with textures, from clay masks, prints of flowers and leaves in tiles, to ornamental pieces for the garden.
I’d found freedom in clay, endless shapes and the inspiration I constantly see in people and nature.
Living in Seattle is been a great experience and inspiration to create my art, its diversity of the people, the environment, and the collaboration of art projects with other artists it’s been very pleasant.
That’s why I called it my second home.
